Glorious to again see a sheet of water across Long Swamp.
While still some way below the level seen late in 2022 the area is providing a brilliant variety of habitats – open water, exposed mudflat and dense cane-grass meadow. The next few months will be interesting as some of the northern hemisphere waders arrive. I’d certainly hope to see Latham’s Snipe, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Red-necked Stint, and possibly a rarity or two such as Marsh Sandpiper and Wood Sandpiper.
Fingers crossed.
Apart from the birds pictured here I recorded Golden-headed Cisticola, Grey Teal, Australian Shelduck, White-faced Heron and Whistling Kite.
