I used this lens as my primary birding lens for two years before I updated to the 100-400 f/4.5 – 5.6L. It’s in very good condition and produces extremely sharp images, especially of birds in flight. It’s nice and light and really its only downfall is a lack of image stabilisation which means you typically need a shutter speed of 1/400 or better. Works well with a monopod. RRP is currently around $1750+ (not grey market).

Canon Inc. say … While it may offer super image quality, super build quality and super features, the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM is certainly not super in size. Relatively small and lightweight within its class – yet still solidly robust – this super telephoto lens excels in a number of photographic fields. Its outstanding optical performance makes it the ideal sports photography lens, while its lightweight stature makes it perfectly suited to wildlife photography and bird photography – especially when capturing birds in flight. Image sharpness is exceptional, assisted in part by its ring-type USM, which delivers fast, accurate and quiet autofocus. Using this lens, chromatic aberration, vignetting and distortion are all very well controlled, while colour, contrast and saturation are beautifully reproduced. Bokeh is equally impressive, as the eight-blade aperture allows you to create a striking background blur to bring enhanced focus to your subject.
