The opportunist

Dusky Woodswallows are renowned aerialists, experts at catching flying insects on the wing.

As this set of images reveal they are also opportunistic hunters. At Green Gully, spring rain has brought earthworms to the surface and a small party of woodswallows were feasting. The strategy involved perching on a low vantage point, then searching intently before descending to pluck the hapless prey from the surface of the soil.

  2. Great photos

  3. Hard to say which I love most as aerialists at this time of year. Welcome Swallows or Dusky Wood Swallows. Either way, watching them, is like a re-rerun (to me) of the Battle of Britain. I am in awe of their nimbleness.
