Sunday Hobby

Brown Falcons, Australian Kestrels and Black-shouldered Kites are the common raptors on the plains at the moment. Whistling Kites and Black Kites, both in reasonable numbers over summer, have declined in recent months – perhaps the cold winter has encouraged them to move northwards. It was a nice surprise therefore to see this lone Australian Hobby earlier today. The flight shot got mangled as a cloud arrived just as I was getting the camera settled on the tripod, spoiling the nice side light that I had moments earlier.

At first glance this looked like a young bird but I’m not so sure.
