Sea-Eagle encounter

Delighted with a brief sea-eagle encounter at Cairn Curran Reservoir last evening.

White-bellied Sea-Eagle (immature), Cairn Curran, 12th January 2015. Note the dark throat band.

This immature White-bellied Sea-Eagle is a second or third year individual. The patchy buff-white head and body is typical of younger birds, with the pure white tail – lacking a dark sub-terminal tail band, separating it from a recently fledged juvenile. I’ve not seen any of this seasons young around so the success or otherwise of the 2014 nest remains a mystery for now.

Note the white head and tail.

Characteristic silhouette – broad wings a feature.
