A Mistletoebird at the cricket

I spent a little while over the weekend watching our local cricket team in action at the Newstead Recreation Reserve. Birdwatching was not on the agenda but I could hardly miss this female Mistletoebird, gathering cobwebs from underneath the old scoreboard.

It made a series of visits, hovering each time like a Hummingbird, before darting in to snatch cobwebs that were wafting in the breeze. I can only assume it was making, or refurbishing a nearby nest.

The red under-tail coverts are a key distinguishing feature.
