Grasslands morning with Newstead Landcare
Victoria’s beautiful native grasslands were the ecosystems that attracted European settlement in the 1800s. As a result, they are one of our most diminished natural splendours and resources. But they still live in our area and can be seen and helped. Join Newstead Landcare for their October field day as Nathan Wong, PhD researcher into native grasslands and Grassy Ecosystem Co-ordinator for the Trust for Nature, introduces us to some rare treasures. Nathan will take us to native grassland remnants in 3 very different states of being, and will help us to understand the processes at work and what the grasslands provide. A rare opportunity indeed!
The field day will be this Sunday October 23rd, car pooling from Newstead Community Centre at 9.30 am and returning at about 12.15pm. All are welcome to attend (gold coin donations appreciated). Bring a mug for morning tea. A very brief AGM will be held during morning tea, before we return to Newstead.

Saturday 2nd October at 11am – FOBIF Photographic exhibition opening
Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests is holding an exhibition of photos highlighting the remarkable beauty of our local woodlands. Photos have been selected from the gallery of the website of the Friends of the Box-Ironbark Forests www.fobif.org.au
The title of the exhibition emphasises that apparently modest scrub can reveal wonders when you look closely. The exhibition continues a tradition the Friends started in 1999 with their first Mamunya festival. This word comes from a Dja Dja Wurrung chant, ‘pata, mamunya, jirarunga,’ meaning, ‘wait a while, don’t touch it, growing up.’ Goldfields woodlands were devastated in the nineteenth century, and their regeneration has been a long and remarkable story. This exhibition celebrates that regeneration.
Alison Pouliot, internationally renowned environmental scientist and photographer, will open the exhibition at 11 am on Saturday, 2 October at the Market Building in Mostyn Street. Refreshments will be provided. FOBIF members and friends are welcome. The exhibition will finish at the end of October.

Photopoint Monitoring & Environmental Photography Workshops – Spring 2010
Taking representational images of Australian natural environment presents many challenges. However, with a little understanding of both photographic principles and the inherent characteristics of the subject, a comprehensive visual representation of environmental change can be documented.
The workshop will explore the major principles of camera operation and photographic technique for effective photography of environmental subjects, including people in the natural environment. It will also cover the use of photography as a scientific tool for documenting environmental change in a technique known as Photopoint Monitoring. Post-photography image management including metadata and workflow protocols will also be addressed as well as other aspects of Digital Asset Management to ensure the development of a systematic and accessible visual history of the natural environment.
The workshop includes an interactive & illustrated theoretical component followed by a field trip to put principles into practice. It is aimed at those working in environmental management, Landcare & environment rehabilitation, landholders/students & anyone interested in documenting the natural environment. Beginners to advanced photographers welcome.
The Presenter: Alison Pouliot has developed and presented scientific and environmental photography training workshops to the environmental industry for the last 12 years. Prior to this she worked as a freshwater research scientist for over a decade with various environmental management and protection authorities. Her photographic work has been widely published.
Requirements: Cameras (including battery charger and instruction manual if available), lunch and wet weather gear if necessary.

Connecting Country presentation on fauna of the local bushland by Lindy Lumsden and Greg Horrocks
Wildlife ecologist Lindy Lumsden from the Arthur Rylah Institute in Melbourne will be talking about local bat species. Australia has over 90 species of bats, including 13 on the northern plains of Victoria. Some are as small as ten grams, and could fit into a matchbox. They are not only interesting, but useful to farmers, because of the vast number of insects they eat.
Also speaking will be one of Victoria’s highly regarded wildlife experts, Monash University researcher Greg Horrocks. Greg is well known for being a knowledgeable and engaging speaker, who can draw on a vast store of personal experiences with our woodland and forest fauna. Greg will talk on woodland birds and has 35 years experience in ecological survey work, ranging across Victorian landscapes from the box-ironbark country to rainforests in East Gippsland and the red gum forests of the Murray Valley. His research and investigations have focused on birds, mammals and invertebrates.
The event is free and open to the public. It will take place at the Falder-Watson Hall, 208 Barker St in Castlemaine, and start at 7.30pm followed by discussion, tea and coffee.

Field Day on 2nd Generation REVEGETATION
Taking the next step—the ground flora
9.30am start to 12.30pm
Along the NEW Castlemaine to Campbells Creek walking/cycling track
-Hands on learning on how to start re-establishing a biodiverse understorey and ground flora-
Have you ever wished you could bring back the wildflowers to a patch of bush, eliminate the weeds from your revegetation or get plants for free by regeneration of native species?
These issues and more will be discussed and demonstrated at this field day. Attendees will experience hands-on some of the simple practical techniques involved.
Connecting Country has funded this work as one of its first projects as part of its aim to restore landscapes across the Mount Alexander Shire.
Ian Higgins, group member and revegetation expert with the North Central Catchment Management Authority has been experimenting with restoration of riparian native vegetation since 1986. Come along to hear about his experiences with bushland regeneration along Campbells Creek. (Take a peek at the new path before its launch as well!).
Ian said he’d be ‘showing off’ some of the landcare group’s riparian and dryland revegetation work of varying ages to demonstrate what can be achieved.
WHERE: Lindsay Park in Campbells Creek, 2.5 km south of Castlemaine on Midland Hwy (the road to Daylesford), with parking in Lindsay St. just 100 m north of “Book Heaven” .
Light snacks and refreshments provided.
Please bring gloves and suitable clothing and if you can a trowel or mattock.

Sunday 28th March at DIG Cafe – Rocket Science #13 “What future for our rivers – is it possible to reconcile competing demands for a scarce resource….in a drying climate?” with Dr. Paul Sinclair, Healthy Ecosystems Program Manager with the Australian Conservation Foundation.
Paul is well known for his marvelous book “The Murray: A river and its people”, published in 2001. He grew up at Kerang, on the Loddon River, a tributary of the Murray. His first memory of the river is a flood in the early 1970s when he was 12. The book explores the reasons why the river has become degraded, and what these changes have meant to Australians. According to Martin Flanagan, Paul Sinclair “is a new sort of Australian public intellectual. His view of the environment goes way beyond the polarity of greenies versus rednecks”.

The walk will be launched on Sunday November 8th. We will have a very brief Landcare AGM at 9.30am, launch the walk at 10am with a morning tea and then invite attendees to go for the walk.
