Stalking a goshawk

A visit to the Loddon River yesterday as a fishing companion was enlivened by the nearby calls of a bird of prey. The shrill chatter sounded like an Accipiter, either a Collared Sparrowhawk or Brown Goshawk. It proved to be the latter, in fact a young Brown Goshawk Accipiter fasciatus with one of the parents also nearby. Both birds were quite wary, in typical goshawk fashion and although I managed to get some photos of the youngster, the adult eluded me despite a determined stalking effort. Alas, each time I got it in my sights it flew a short distance into deeper cover.

The young bird is still developing its flying skills!

This may well have been the successful nest site, high up in a River Red-gum.

As we departed this Black-shouldered Kite passed directly overhead, providing a fantastic view.
