It may of course never have been away but it’s many months since I’ve spotted a White-bellied Sea-Eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster on Cairn Curran Reservoir. I was treated with a great sight late today when one cruised by close overhead. We tend to associate this species with coastal habitats but they are resident on many of the larger inland lakes, wetlands and reservoirs. The Murray River is also a stronghold – in fact the proliferation of European Carp has been a positive for Sea-Eagles across inland habitats.
This bird was attracting a fair bit of attention – a Black-shouldered Kite and a pair of Australian Kestrels making a number of aggressive passes at the intruder.
